For a brief time in 2010, there were no holes available in Martinique, but after having some repair work done on it, the island's only golf course reopened in January of 2011. Though Martinique is not particularly known for its golf offerings, vacationers who want to hit the links do have the possibility.
The 18-hole Empress Josephine Golf Course ( Le Golf de l'Impératrice Josephine) at the Martinique Golf and Country Club is named for Empress Josephine, wife of French Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte. Josephine was born on June 23, 1763 in La Pagerie, Martinique, which is very near where the course was built.
The Empress Josephine Golf Course was designed by acclaimed golf course architect Robert Trent Jones, and built in the 1970s, featuring genius use of the surrounding tropical topography to create a par-71 course. The course is laid out so that golfers run through two nine-hole circuits, which offer views of the Caribbean Sea and run by a stream and several natural ponds.
A rarity in Martinique, the Martinique Golf and Country Club is home to an English-speaking staff at the bar, pro, pro-shop, and restaurant. There are no caddies available, but golfers can rent a club trolley for EUR 6 or a cart for between EUR 23 and EUR 34. Green fees are EUR 23 for nine holes and EUR 43 for 18 holes, but golfers visiting from cruise ships will receive a discount.
True, there is only one option for golf in Martinique, but the Martinique Golf and Country Club has done its best to make the Empress Josephine Golf Course a course worth visiting. If golfing is your passion, you won't want to miss your chance to tee off in Martinique.
